What adhesion does the cluster need?
The cluster game must be read according to its own adjacency and minimum-count rules. Diagonal touch may not be sufficient or there are other grid conditions. Also check how the cascade continues and if there is a change in the multiplier after removing the eligible cluster.
If only horizontal and vertical adjacencies are allowed, two groups that are only diagonally connected should not be simply merged. Read the actual rule before making this count.
- Eligible adjacencies
- Minimum cluster size
- Cascade and multiplier reset
In worked grids of separate and connected clusters, two groups of three are compared to a group of seven. It can be seen why the total symbol count is not enough if there is no legal connection.
Additional checklist
With Aztec Gems, there is a separate question about the feature itself. Read the Aztec Gems: why is the fourth multiplier reel separate? for documented rules and clear hypothetical examples.
For a focused example, read Gems Bonanza: when a whole-grid clear follows the tumbles.
A payline diagram is not a sufficient explanation for the cluster payout.
Prioritize the rules screen itself and current operator conditions. If there is an unclear unit, trigger or scope, don’t make assumptions.
